The Protection of Copyright in India is governed by "The Copyright Act, 1957". This Act has been amended several times, with the amendment of 2012 being the most substantial.

Copyright means the exclusive right to do or authorized others to do certain acts in relation to literary, dramatic, musical works, artistic works, cinematography film and sound recording. Copyright law protects only the form of expression of ideas and not the ideas themselves. In India, the duration of a Copyright varies. However, generally the duration of copyright extends to 60 years.

Copyright law protects the owner of property rights against those who copy or otherwise take and use the form in which the original work was expressed by the author.
