Geographical Indications

Geographical Indications (GIs) are protected under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999

Overview

In India, Geographical Indications (GIs) are protected under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. A Geographical Indication identifies goods as originating from a specific geographical region, where a particular quality, reputation, or characteristic of the goods is essentially attributable to their place of origin.
Well-known Indian GIs include Darjeeling Tea, Mysore Silk, Malihabadi Dusseheri Mango, and Solapur Chaddar. GI protection helps preserve the uniqueness, authenticity, and commercial value of regional products while safeguarding the interests of producers and consumers.
