Overview

In India, industrial design protection is governed by the Designs Act, 2000. A design refers to the visual features of an article, including its shape, configuration, pattern, ornamentation, or composition of lines and colours, which appeal solely to the eye. Design registration protects the aesthetic appearance of a product and grants the registered proprietor exclusive rights over the design.
A registered design is protected for an initial period of 10 years from the date of registration, which may be extended by a further 5 years upon renewal.
